Martin May 1957-2009

It is with deep sorrow that I have to report the passing of Martin May, a pillar of the live music scene in Brighton & Hove. Those of you who knew Martin will remember him for his blistering guitar work, his huge personality and the relentless energy he put into live music. He was central not only to gigs and charity events around the City, but also in supporting and welcoming the efforts of budding newcomers to the circuit. I am sure you will join me in saluting this amazing man. Our thoughts are with his partner Sue and his immediate family. He will be deeply missed and we thank him for the magic he gave us all.

‘The good die young’ and Martin was one of the very rare few who was a genuine good and remarkable person.
Keep playing for us in guitar heaven Mart. Pete and mine’s love for you will never fade.

I would echo Wilf’s description in every way. Martin was always fun to work with and knew just how to dig right in to a solo (or should that be solos?!! ;-) ) with fire and passion. He had the self same drive when working for ‘Music for Life’ or academia (which he later became involved and excelled in)…Did I mention he could produce a pickled onion as fiery as one of his cranked up guitar solos too? All the best mate…will miss you…

Sue, you did him proud. The service was as fitting as it was moving. Standing room only (like many of his gigs) and I will miss his gift, his talent and inspiration in all things from his electrifying rock guitar to his soft listening heart, from kindness for those he cared about to his bitter (and accurate) condemnation of the things that are wrong in this world. He was never one of them. Thank you for the happy days in the ‘bingo winning’ Jersey snow and ‘free beer’ in the Devon sunshine and all the times in between.

A Broken Arrow flies away and soars to finds it’s own resting place. May his be one of untroubled happiness now. Thank you for the time you were among us.We will all miss you, Mart. Kev x
